The story of Snow White that originates
from the German fairytale by the Brothers Grimm, is no longer only
thought of as just our beloved Disney princess. This year we have seen her
several times. Twice in the cinemas in the movies "Snow White and the
Huntsman" and in "Mirror, Mirror", and she is also in the new
TV-series called "Once Upon a Time". (okay, so it started in 2011, but it is
still going this year)
So that is why this blog post is not called Snow White, but Snow Whites,
Because there is not only one Snow White, but at least four.
(If you keep reading, you are in risk of spoiler alert)
"Snow White and the seven
Dwarfs"
Our
childhood Disney Snow White. The sweet, singing, animal loving and innocent Snow
White.
The
movie is from 1937 and is Walt Disneys first full length cel-animated
production and the first in the world. It is number one of the Disney Classics
that has now rounded 50 with the movie Tangled.
This
is a real Disney princess, and therefore her clothes is long, neat and princess-like
although she lives in the wood. Throughout the movie she only got one
outfits, which makes it easier to make a new and modern outfit. With the others I have to
combine several outfits to one. The clothing I have chosen for this version of
Snow White is overall cute with lace, bows, puff and collars.
Starting
with the blue jacket, I really liked the round 'Peter Pan' collar
and its hourglass form at the waist. It helps showing Snow White as a innocent
and sweet girl. Underneath the jacket, I thought it would be best with a
simple white shirt, it works instead of her big white collar.
I would properly put it down the skirt to emphasize it. The skirt is slim and short compared to Snow
Whites, but it is more modern and suits the jacket very well. As for the earrings and the watch, it is adorable accessories that both
shows her love for animals. Besides, don't you just love the watch? The also
adorable accessory, is the necklace. I guess an apple necklace don't need
much explanation. You will see that all of the outfits have a apple included.
Snow White got a bow in her hair, the outfit got two, the cute one on the clutch and a more edgy one on the scharf, and both red. Last but not least
the shoes: nude stilettos with
laces matches the outfit and Snow Whites personality perfectly.
Snow White from "Once Upon a
Time"
The series is about many of the fairytale
characters you know, so it is not in the same way as the others a story about
Snow White, but her story is the mainstory and the one all the other storys is
build around. She is not the classic Snow White, partly because half of the time she is a regular person, named Mary Margaret, who lives in Storybrooke, Maine(You know what I mean, if you have seen the series, if not - Do it). I have focused on the Snow White part of her and left out Mary Margaret. The series is now on the second season, and throughout the series Snow White got a few different outfits on. I have chosen three.
This
version of snow white is not as girly as Disneys and Mirror, Mirror. This Snow
White lived in periods of her life alone in the woods, and that is shown in her
clothing by being more practical. Two of the three of the outfits from the
serie I have chosen to make the one outfit from is from when she is on the run.
The last one, the white dress in the middle, is from her wedding. It is a challenge to combine all three outfits, and still see all three outfit in the one, especially with the wedding dress included. However, I think I got the essence of Snow Whites style pretty good, and managed to make it modern.
To start with the dress. It is the most girly piece in the outfit. I choose a nude color to match both the wedding dress and the outfit to the right. The dress is princess like, without being to much, and it is a bit sophisticated at the same time. Snow Whites outfit to the right reminds me of a riding outfit, and that is why I chose this brown jacket, which also goes very well with the dress. To get the 'wild' look from her left outfit i choose furry mitts, which is excellent for the season and the cape that actually looks a lot like the one she is wearing and the feathers in the cape also leads back to the wedding dress. I thought of brown boots, but choose these black ones in stead, to get a contrast with the colors, like Snow White got with her hair, so the outfit would not be all brown. To this outfit she also got a apple necklace, but this is more clean, without the diamonds on it.
Snow White from "Mirror, Mirror"
Mirror, Mirror is definitely the comedic version of Snow White and was relished in 2012. The humor is in focus, along side with its bright colors and big exaggerated garments (Think Capitol from Hunger Game style).
Snow White herself wears 4 dresses and a jumpsuit throughout the movie. One yellow and pink dress, with flowers all over, which she puts a yellow cape over when she go out. Then later at a ball she is dressed like a swan, and have therefore wings and a swanhead on her white dress. Later she gets a more practical outfit a jumpsuit with such wide legs that it looks like a dress. In the end she gets married in a big blue dress, with a big blue bow on the bag. And that is the outfits I am going to combine.
So this was actually the version i spend the most time trying to put an outfit together for. I kept replacing the clothes for new one. But I think it ended out good. I really loved her bright yellow cape in the movie, so of cause the jacket had to be bright yellow and just as lovely. The dress is inspired by her blue and black jumpsuit, and catches the sweetness of her style very nicely. A swanhead and wings would have been a little too much, instead i found this cute feather hairband. The shoes (Aren't they fab?) and the necklace is representing her flower dress and the orange purse represents the pig orange bow on the back of her wedding dress. On this outfit the apple comes in with the earrings, and I choose these bright ones with stones because they fit the style of the movie.
"Snow White and the Huntsman"
The second new movie versions of the story of
Snow White is "Snow White and the Huntsman", and action/adventure
movie, it is a darker, more serious version, not filled with bright colors like in Disneys and Mirror, Mirror.
Snow White got three outfits, her very medieval looking red and brown dress, her armor and when they think she is dead for eating of the apple she wears a long white dress (which I have chosen to ignore in her style). In this movie they make a great deal out of Snow White not only being a leader of the kingdom, but also a leader in the war.
The dress don’t look a lot like anything
she wears, but I still think it captures the dark and
not-too-girly-but-still-a-dress look. Besides, do you know how hard it is to find a medieval style dress, that is not a costume. Her amor is represented by several of the stuff: The necklace got a cool shield looking look, the earrings is swords, the belt and the clutch also got a armor-ish touch to it. The jacket is for her coolness, which i thought the outfit would miss a little without it. The apple ring, is in this case not red, but a dark green, to macht the darkness of the movie. Brown boots for her wild look.
